Catalytic Converter Thefts
7/6/2008 Due to the
value of precious metals including platinum,
palladium, and rhodium, catalytic converters are
becoming a target for thieves. The problem is
especially common among late-model Toyota trucks and
SUV's, due to their high ground clearance and
easily-removed bolt-on catalytic converters.
Welded-in converters are also at risk of theft from
SUV's and trucks, as they can be easily removed with
a battery powered reciprocating saw. Malden PD
encourages the city's residents, business owners,
and visitors to be vigilant and report suspicious
activity immediately to the police by calling
781-322-1212. Do not approach suspicious
individuals, but rather act as eyes and ears until
the police arrive. Providing physical
descriptions of suspects and their vehicles (license
numbers, color, etc) can be of great assistance to
the responding officers.

Overnight Vehicle Breaks
- Thefts of GPS Systems
Updated
1/18/2008 |
| There have been an increasing
number of motor vehicle break-ins during overnight hours
across the city. In many instances, the suspect
may be able to see the dock for a portable GPS unit on
the dashboard and is
then removing the GPS system from the victim's
vehicle. MPD strongly encourages all residents to:
- Lock your car doors at all times
- Not leave any items in open
areas of your car - put them in the trunk.
- Remove GPS systems and other
items of value from your car. Also remove the
mounting bracket for the GPS unit, as this may attract a
thief to your vehicle.
If you see suspicious activity at
any time, please call MPD at 781-322-1212. Monitor
the activity and stay on the line with the dispatcher.
Do not alert suspects, but rather act as eyes and ears
until police arrive. |
